Janet Wallace can now add the title of “published author” to her long list of accomplishments. Ms. Wallace recently co-authored the article “Judging Parents, Judging Place: Poverty, Rurality and Termination of Parental Rights,” featured in the Winter, 2012 edition of the Missouri Law Review.

In their article, Ms. Wallace and Lisa Pruitt argue that harsh judgments of impoverished parents who live in rural places are unjust as poor rural parents often do not have ready access to state support in the form of programs that would permit them to be better parents. The authors highlight the state’s hypocrisy in judging rural parents and call attention to the plight of rural families.

Linda wins Wine Country Half Marathon

Linda Somers Smith has done it again! On Sunday, March 25, 2012, Linda took first place in the Wine County Runs Half Marathon in Paso Robles, California with a time of 1:16:25. Her prize? Linda won her weight in wine! Congratulations Linda! To see the official results, click here.

About the race:
Known for its rolling farmlands, its hot springs, and perhaps most famously for its wineries and vineyards, Paso Robles plays host every spring to the annual running of the Wine Country Runs Half Marathon & 5K, an out-and-back loop race that takes over 1,100 runners on a hilly and occasionally challenging route through wide-open fields and the hills just north of town.

Duggan Smith & Heath would like to extend a round of applause to Janet L. Wallace for her wonderful presentation to the Women Lawyer’s Association of San Luis Obispo on May 9, 2012. Ms. Wallace spoke about the current status of women in the legal profession, covering such topics as the compensation gap, the maternal wall, the leak in the pipeline, and that pesky glass ceiling. Ms. Wallace enlightened the audience with frightening facts about women in the legal profession. For example, given the current rate of change, a woman born in 2012 will not see gender equality in the legal profession during her lifetime!

Ms. Wallace also covered how Ms. JD, an organization near and dear to her heart, is changing the face of the legal profession. Ms. JD is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the success of women in law school and the legal profession. Ms. JD boasts a nationwide network of chapters, the largest readership of any blog of its kind, and an array of other programs including an international scholarship fund and the largest online directory of resources for and about women in law. Ms. Wallace is currently the Vice President of Ms. JD.

Linda Somers Smith to be inducted into the Road Runners Hall of Fame!

The Road Runners Club of America, the oldest and largest distance running organization in the United States, has recently announced that Linda Somers Smith will be inducted into the RRCA Distance Running Hall of Fame and will receive the 2011 Female Master Road Runner of the Year Award. Linda will be honored at the upcoming RRCA National Running Awards Banquet and Ceremony on March 17, 2012, in Memphis, Tennessee. Duggan Smith & Heath likes Book Club in a Box

The DSH ladies are taking advantage of an amazing program offered by the San Luis Obispo County Library and sponsored by San Luis Obispo Friends of the Library. The “Book Club In A Box” kit contains 10 paperback copies of a title, discussion questions and background information about the book and author. Kits can be checked out for 6 weeks! Duggan Smith and Heath at the 2011 San Luis Obispo Holiday Parade

The Duggan Smith & Heath family and friends had a great time at the 2011 San Luis Obispo “Beary Merry” Holiday Parade! The DSH staff built and entered a “beary” amazing float, which was towed behind “the Blue-Beary”, driven by DSH Partner Linda Somers Smith. After the parade, the 40+ Teddy Bears that made up the float were donated to the Laguna Middle School’s Latino Family Christmas Party. We are looking forward to next year’s holiday parade!

Linda Somers Smith sets new record in 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials

Linda Somers Smith took 28th place in the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston, Texas on January 14, 2012. Linda accomplished her goal of placing in the top 20 to 30 runners, and set the U.S. marathon record for women age 50 or older.Linda ran an amazing 2:37:36 to pulverize the U.S. 50-54 age group record of 2:47:50 previously held by Joan Samuelson.
