Duggan Smith and Heath at the 2011 San Luis Obispo Holiday Parade

The Duggan Smith & Heath family and friends had a great time at the 2011 San Luis Obispo “Beary Merry” Holiday Parade! The DSH staff built and entered a “beary” amazing float, which was towed behind “the Blue-Beary”, driven by DSH Partner Linda Somers Smith. After the parade, the 40+ Teddy Bears that made up the float were donated to the Laguna Middle School’s Latino Family Christmas Party. We are looking forward to next year’s holiday parade!

Linda Somers Smith sets new record in 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials

Linda Somers Smith took 28th place in the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston, Texas on January 14, 2012. Linda accomplished her goal of placing in the top 20 to 30 runners, and set the U.S. marathon record for women age 50 or older.Linda ran an amazing 2:37:36 to pulverize the U.S. 50-54 age group record of 2:47:50 previously held by Joan Samuelson.

Linda Somers Smith named USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week

Linda Somers Smith Sets Pending Age-Group World-Record at Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll L.A. Half-Marathon

Finishing second to [Olympic Marathon bronze medalist and American half-marathon record holder Deena] Kastor in 1:15:18 was Linda Somers Smith, who won last year’s inaugural race here. The 50-year-old from Arroyo Grande set a pending age-group world-record with her time on Sunday morning, a performance that bodes well as she prepares for her fifth Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston on January 12 of next year.

“It’s really good,” Somers Smith said of her finish. “I’m just trying to be really cautious so I can get (to the Trials) not injured. I really liked the course. It makes you go out a little too fast because it’s so flat the first half and then it gets a little tough, and it’s not very tough–just a little tough–but if I hadn’t gone out too fast it would have been perfect. I’m happy.

2011 WLASLO Judicial Reception

The WLA’s 2011 Judicial Reception at Buona Tavola in downtown San Luis Obispo provided a wonderful opportunity to honor our local judges for the valuable service they provide our community. A special presentation was made in honor of Judge Estrada-Mullaney’s twenty years of exemplary service and mentorship. In addition, our very own Jane Heath was sworn in as Vice President for the ensuing term.

Open Studios Art Tour

As a Member of the ARTS Obispo Board of Directors and as Chair of the SLO County Open Studios Art Tour (OSAT), DSH attorney Janet Wallace warmly invites you to one of the largest Open Studios tours in the country. The tour takes place over three weekends in October:

• October 15-16: South County
• October 22-23: North County
• October 29-30: Countywide Encore Weekend

With over 200 artists participating by opening their studios to visitors, the tour showcases the quality and diversity of art produced in SLO County. Visitors can see and purchase a wide range of original work by local artists who appreciate the opportunity to share how, why and where their art is created.

OSAT is not only a showcase for artists and a feast for collectors, but ARTS Obispo’s largest fundraiser. The funds from Open Studios support ARTS Obispo’s community-based programs such as Arts in Education, Art in Public Places, and Art After Dark.

Catalogs and maps are available at local businesses or for free download online.

Jane Heath and Janet Wallace Celebrate Women’s Suffrage in California and Meet “First Woman” Barbara Babcock

Attorneys Jane Heath and Janet Wallace attended the 100th Celebration of Women’s Right to Vote in California at the Dallidet Adobe in San Luis Obispo. What a wonderful celebration!

The keynote speaker, Professor Barbara Babcock, inspired the crowd with the story of Clara Foltz, suffragist and California’s first woman attorney. Professor Babcock is herself a first woman lawyer, serving as the first woman professor at Stanford Law School, including the first to gain tenure, the first to hold an endowed chair, and the first to be an Emerita.

Linda Named One of Top Women in Business

Linda Somers Smith, managing partner of Duggan Smith & Heath LLP based in San Luis Obispo, was recently honored as one of the “Top 50 Women in Business” in the Tri-County area by The Pacific Coast Business Times.

Somers Smith was recognized in the Professional Services industry category for her consistent leadership as the founder and managing partner of a majority women-owned law firm in downtown San Luis Obispo.

The 50 honorees, described as “leading the way in a dynamic era,” were selected from companies throughout San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

The women were recognized in an awards ceremony on April 11 at Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Resort in Santa Barbara, where they were presented with awards from The Pacific Coast Business Times, as well as certificates of recognition from California State Assembly members.
